Develop Writing Skills in German with only ChatGPT! Not from your teacher ever!😉

Updated: Apr 25

Seriously, you are just a few commands in ChatGPT away from becoming fluent in German langauge!😃

If you are one of the person who have been learning German from a live teacher and wanted to improve your writing skills, odds are one of the following things might have occured to you:

  • You wrote an essay to your teacher, and he/she will say that you'll get your correction earliest by tomorrow, which is a min. 24 hour time. And you go and see the teacher with your essay being corrected, but then it looks messy (way messier than how you have written it😅), and there's a 50/50 chance, he/she will got through with you on the essay and the correction that's needed to be made.

  • The second scenario is that he makes correction with you on the spot, while you are sitting right beside you. He/she will go through sentence by sentence or paragraph by paragraph and correct them and give explanations to you on the grammers you need to correct, sentence structures you need to enhance and some vocab & phrases to boost your writing experiences. Sounds better than the previous scenario right? But I reckon that this might have taken you for almost an 1 hour or more for a 1-page essay written by you.

  • Another scenario that I have seen with essay correction by teachers is the bias correction. What do I mean here is that even tough a paragraph is grammetically correct and the sentence structure is as per the langauge criteria, the teacher will make changes to a whole sentence, paragraph or heck even a whole essay, simply because it doesn't sound well to them. But if you are to ask for corrections from couple other teachers or tutors, you'll be suprised to see that that particular sentence or paragraph was absolutely fine all along!

  • And this last scenario is the worst one I would say: the teacher will glance through the essay, again glance through and not read you essay, do couple of corrections and sent it back to you without telling you much where you need to improve, sounds familiar?🫥

So, the traditional ways of improving your German wiritng skills takes immense amount of time (more than 1 hour for each 1-page essay) and even if it were corrected, there's no 100% guarantee that every single mistakes are corrected all the time, and eventually you yourself need more time to go through your corrected essay and look for ways to improve them.

So.... the C1-Level guaranteed question here: How do you improve yourself in terms of writing a better essay in German with ChatGPT?

The following process helps you to improve practice German language:

  1. Write down your paragraph based off an exercise from an exam's modelset or from an exercise book/document.

Right now as an example, I have requested my student who'll be preparing for B2-exam to write an email based of the following exercise from Goethe B2's Exam Modelset:

And my student has written down the following text:

    ---

    Sehr geehrter Herr Alex,

    Dash

    ---

  1. Ask ChatGPT to ONLY do Correction with the following command: ''Please correct the following paragraph only, do not rephrase anything, and show me the mistakes in terms of grammar and sentence structure''

And as per the command, you'll receive a corrected text with some of the words and sentences that have mistakes highlighted here:

And of course, you'll have a reference provided on the particular grammer mistakes here:

  2. Cool, now with the corrected paragraph, rephrase the following paragraph to German (German level as in A1/A2/B1/B2/C1)-standard. In this example, I'm rephrasing it to B2 level:

''Cool, now with the corrected paragraph, rephrase the following paragraph to German B2-standard''

  1. Finally, ask ChatGPT to explain on the rephrasing it made with the following comment:

''Show me and explain how the rephrase is made from the original corrected text to your rephrased B2 text''

Additionally, you can ask ChatGPT to rate your scoring based off the exam standard, whether it's the Goethe, TELC, CEFR, etc, which can give you the level you are at now. You can use the command ''Please rate my text correction based off the standard of (exam you are taking, ex. Goethe German A1, Telc B2, etc...) for the (part 1/2/3/...) of the writing section.''

And that is all! Just this 4 simple steps, and you can correct, learn and even develop well out of your mistake of writing German sentences and text, and be well on your way to reaching out C1 or hell even C2 level! Of writing German better than the native speakers!🤩
