So in the course of learning the German language, there are a couple of aspects of a language where there are an abundance of resources to practice learning German.

Grammar? Easy Peasy! When it comes to learning grammar, the options are endless. Sites like Lingolia provide exercises that make understanding complex German grammar feel like a walk in the park. You’ll be conjugating verbs and combining sentences real easy and real fast — Danke, Lingolia! 📚

Reading? Oh, So Much Content! Other from grammar, finding materials for reading nowadays is a breeze with all the online articles, books, and even quizzes you can get your hands on. Whether it’s open-ended questions or true-or-false exercises, you can find plenty to practice with and improve your reading comprehension. The world of German literature is literally at your fingertips. Seriously, with the various AI apps and tools that exist nowadays... no need to leave your couch! 🛋️

Writing? ChatGPT Got Your Back! And I've already talked about how ChatGPT can help you improve your writing skills, so no need to repeat myself.😅 But seriously, if you’re not using ChatGPT for your German writing exercises, you’re missing out! It’s like having a virtual tutor available 24/7, minus the coffee breaks. ☕🖋️

Speaking? Human Interaction FTW! And lastly, when it comes to speaking and conversation skills, there’s no substitute for real human interaction. Whether it’s face-to-face or online via platforms like Preply, getting that live, personal practice is priceless. And hey, talking to a fluent speaker with compassion and patience (whether native or non-native speakers) to see through your improvement of German language skills will give you those nuances you can't get from textbooks. 🗣️

Now, here’s where things get tricky. While we can easily find resources to work on grammar, reading, writing, and speaking, listening can be a bit of a challenge. The thing is, it’s not always easy to find quality exercises for improving listening skills. Sure, ChatGPT can generate lessons, but... it's not quite there yet, especially when it comes to different voices, tones, or accents.

What if I told you that you could use cutting-edge AI to make your listening skills even better? Enter Eleven Labs, the best tool for making listening exercises that fit your needs in any style or tone. Eleven Labs has everything you need, from content for tests to conversations at work to even creating voices for ads!

Imagine you could get listening exercises tailored specifically to your needs: different voices, different accents, different speeds. This tool takes text and transforms it into high-quality, natural-sounding audio. It’s like having a personal voice actor at your disposal to practice your listening skills in a variety of scenarios. Why is this a game-changer? Traditional listening exercises just can’t offer the level of customization you need. With Eleven Labs, you can make listening exercises feel more realistic by choosing different tones and even adjusting the speed of speech. This is especially useful when learning German, as the language can be spoken in various speeds and tones depending on the region or context (casual, formal, fast, slow).

Here is a guide on how to create various listening exercises using both ChatGPT and Eleven Labs:

Step 1: Generate Text with ChatGPT

Before you can create a listening exercise, you need some content. Use ChatGPT to generate text based on the type of listening exercise you want.

Let's just take as an example that we are preparing a couple of exercises that are more focused on preparing for the Goethe B2 exam, and as an example here, we'll prepare part 2 of the exam with ChatGPT. Let's prepare the following prompt for ChatGPT:

"

Create a script for the German listening exercise based on the following criteria: it's based off Goethe Exam Level B2, Part 2 of the listening section (which is an interview between 2 people); the topic spoken is ''Gesunde Lebenswese durch Veganismus''; create the text long enough as per the exam standard to create 6 multiple-choice questions. The multiple-choice questions should be up to 6, with 3 choices given on each. And lastly, to provide the answers to the multiple-choice questions.

"

You can check out the following link, where you can see the result given with the following: https://chatgpt.com/share/6834cf5a-9434-800f-8c55-91120fe821c8

ChatGPT then gives me the script, which we can then transfer to Eleven Labs.

You can save both the script and questions along with the sheets in a word file like the one below:

Step 2: Bring the Text Over to Eleven Labs & Edit

Great, now that you’ve got your script, it’s time to head over to Eleven Labs. The platform will allow you to upload or paste the text directly into their system. This is the pivotal moment!

Here’s a screenshot of what that looks like:

Step 3: Choosing voices and delegating them here

Once the text is in the system, you can choose from several options to customize your audio. Eleven Labs lets you:

  • Select different speaking styles (e.g., formal, casual, professional, friendly).

  • Adjust the speed of speech (e.g., slow for beginners, faster for advanced learners).

  • Choose various voices, including male and female voices or even specific accents (e.g., a German speaker with a Bavarian accent).

Step 4: Download Your Audio and Create Questions

Once you choose necessary tones and accents for each line or paragraph, you should bring all of them together into one big paragraph to download all of them; otherwise, the download will only be by each paragraph.

Once bringing all sentences into one big paragraph, click on the play button, and later, once hearing the audio, click on the download button on the bottom right; it's time to download it. Please save the audio file in MP3 or WAV format and pair it with your questions.

Here’s an example of what your final result might look like:

You can also adjust the pitch and tone to make sure it fits the kind of listening practice you need.

Using Eleven Labs in combination with ChatGPT is a game-changer for developing your listening skills. You get the flexibility of different voices and speaking styles, which is exactly what you need to truly understand the language in a variety of contexts.

So, go ahead, make those listening exercises, and start mastering German with style (and a little help from AI)! 💥
