Struggles of Learning German Traditionally in Classroom

Updated: Nov 26, 2024

Funny to say this may not work, but it's just too much effort for too big of a price.

Distinguishing the difference between learning a language since childhood from family & friends, the alternative way is to learn it from a square classroom space, or in the modern context an online class in a square screen. Either way learning from a teacher or a tutor has its differences compared to learning a language from family & friends:

Classroom VS F&F (Family and Friends):

  1. Logic & Common Sense VS Lively Emotions

A prime distinct can be seen whenever a student attends a language lesson and hoping to learn something new, and the result of learning something new is always associated with having to understand a new piece of grammar. In contrast to that, learning languages from a family member, say your life partner or close friend feels like there wont be neither proper sentence structure nor grammar, however you do at end up learning bunch of expressions, short sentences in a day or a week that are not just easy to grasp as per say in a lesson but you are able to remember them long enough to use them again and again and again... With the materials learned in a lesson period, how often do you feel you have used it?

2. Writing & Reading VS Speaking & Listening

Oftentimes the most common issue that I have faced from most the people that I had in my session, say almost 80% of them, said that eventough they know the language quiet well and that they have learned it from a teacher or a tutor and have reached B1 or B2 level (intermediate), they lack the ability to have even the basic conversation in German, let alone to formulate a full sentence verbally in German.

And this is something I can relate myself as well, as I was learning German in a classroom setup, and despite the long-standing efforts and continuous support from teachers of both from my home country and in Germany, the very thing that lacked from them was the encouragement to practice speaking the language itself with me. And boy oh boy did I struggle much after 3 years of learning German from them to starting to using them only when I enrolled in a university for Bachelor course, in German!😮😱

Based off the lessons I had so far, the students with whom I have given more speaking practice right form the beginning improved more than those with whom I'm giving more grammar materials to.

Let me put the reason in a more relatable situation to something else: In developing a start-up engineering firm to the next level, in which you want to develop or improve new technologies with more necessity for application basis in accordance to market's demand, would you rely on the engineer who has a diploma (or Ausbildung in German) and has many years of hands-on experiences or... the engineer with Master degrees but no real-life engineering experiences? Who would hire and even pay more?

  1. Have to VS Want to

On usual basis for the German language itself, the reason as to why people learn German in a classroom setup is because of either for education or job purpose. Though the reason is pretty strong, the reason itself is on the external end. You may try as hard as you can to learn German, but if you not motivated from within, or if you find that language to be not... difficult, but rather bad, then these emotions will always be there to repel your learning efforts, and most definitely you gonna in a LOT of stress.

But say if you are learning German on the basis of 'Want to', what and how will it be? There's 2 ways to go about on this. One, you do find the elements of the German language to be interesting, whether with the way it's spoken, the German culture, the music in that language or any other form of entertainment such as movies or Netflix series. The second reason, which is much intimate, is the loved ones💗. There's just no description in terms of how much you can learn a language from someone you love most dear to or you are close to, such ways of learning is much more of compelling reason no matter how bad you may feel about the language. After all, that's why growing up you have not only parents but the whole community around you, whether your close buddies or the neighbors, you are very much in-tune to learn and speak their native language right from the gecko, and now it's your native language.

It's pretty hypocritical of me as a tutor to myself to say that a 'classroom' setting is less efficient than learning from F&F, but all things considered from my experience, if you want to pick up the pace in learning German with stress-free...

Find a way to 'wanting' to learn, and not a way to 'needing' to learn.

With that being said, I wish your German learning pathway is much of ease and fun.
